Building resilience, community by community

RECOAT is a Civil Society Organization concerned with the social, economic, and development wellbeing of the people of Malawi, with specific technical reference to disaster risk reduction, food security, WASH, climate change adaptation, gender, child protection, and quality and accountability standards, disaster laws, policies, and legislation.

RECOAT is registered in Malawi as a Trust and is a member of the Council for Non-Governmental Organizations in Malawi (CONGOMA), registered with the NGO Board of Malawi. Since its establishment, RECOAT has partnered with organizations including CADECOM, OSISA, OSSEDI, and TEVETA across programs spanning livelihoods, WASH, disability rights advocacy, community-managed disaster risk reduction, micro-finance, emergency relief and rehabilitation, climate change, youth empowerment, and early childhood development and education.

RECOAT's activities are aligned with national and international policy frameworks, including the Millennium Development Goals, Malawi's Growth and Development Strategy, Malawi's National Food and Nutrition Security Policy, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), National Adaptation Programmes of Action, and national and international gender and human rights instruments.

RECOAT operates with no fixed boundaries across Malawi's districts, with offices in Blantyre, Chiradzulu, Phalombe, and Mulanje, and plans to expand its physical presence to more districts over time. Most recently, RECOAT has led emergency response efforts for communities affected by Cyclone Freddy across Blantyre, Phalombe, Mulanje, Thyolo, and Chiradzulu — distributing food, shelter, and WASH kits to families who lost their homes, crops, and access to basic services.
