A community-led model of care
RECOAT's impact rests on an integrated, evidence-based community model of care, delivered through 1,123 Community Health Workers organized around 92 Community Health Centres, each made up of 15–20 members from the same locality. CHWs mobilize, follow up with, and refer clients to local clinics, enabling sustainability across every program area.
All activities are implemented in collaboration with Malawi's Ministry of Health under the devolved health system structure, using both the community action cycle and the community score card to maximize community participation, sustainability, and accountability.
Health outcomes in the 2017 reporting period
During the 2017 reporting period, RECOAT reached a total of 12,300 women, girls, and youth with sexual and reproductive health services, and 49,492 people with gender-based violence messaging. Index family testing of PLHIV family members, including children, had the highest positivity at 11%, while overall positivity across all testing strategies stood at 1.9%.
RECOAT reached 13,495 pregnant women with HIV testing; 100% of those identified as HIV-positive received ART, and the overall mother-to-child HIV transmission rate was 3.5%, in line with national elimination targets. By the end of the year, 7,844 adults and adolescents were receiving sexual reproductive services, GBV messaging, and HIV care with RECOAT's support, with 99.9% of those eligible receiving ART in line with national test-and-treat guidelines. During the year, 3,155 adults and 177 children were newly initiated onto life-saving ART.
RECOAT also strengthened its Maternal and Child Health programming, reaching 8,795 children under five with child welfare clinical services, including immunization, HIV testing, nutritional assessment and counselling, and family planning services for parents.
