Health: HIV, Sexual & Reproductive Health, and GBV Response
Maternal and neonatal health, family planning, HIV/TB prevention and treatment, and gender-based violence response, delivered through a community health worker network in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
RECOAT provides Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) services, Family Planning, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) response, Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (ASRHR) services, and HIV/TB prevention interventions, delivered through capacity building and services quality assurance in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
RECOAT operates in an area with an HIV prevalence estimated at around 12% in urban and peri-urban settings. Programming is delivered through an integrated, evidence-based community model of care in which sustainability is factored in from the outset, using both the community action cycle and the community score card to maximize participation and accountability under the devolved health system structure.
This work is made possible by RECOAT's community health worker network — 1,123 Community Health Workers (CHWs) organized around 92 Community Health Centres of 15–20 members drawn from the same locality — who mobilize, follow up with, and refer clients to local clinics.
What this looks like
- Sexual and reproductive health services: family planning, HIV testing and counselling, and messaging for women, girls, and youth
- Gender-based violence (GBV) awareness messaging and response
- HIV testing, ART initiation, and adherence support in line with national test-and-treat guidelines
- Maternal and neonatal health services, including antenatal HIV testing and prevention of mother-to-child transmission
- Child welfare clinical services for children under five, including immunization, HIV testing, and nutrition assessment
- Community action cycle and community score card processes to strengthen participation and accountability
What it has achieved
- 12,300 women, girls, and youth reached with sexual and reproductive health services (family planning, HIV testing and counselling, and messaging)
- 49,492 people reached with gender-based violence messaging
- 13,495 pregnant women reached with HIV testing; 100% of identified HIV-positive pregnant women received ART; mother-to-child transmission rate of 3.5%, in line with elimination targets
- 7,844 adults and adolescents received sexual reproductive, GBV, and HIV care; 99.9% of those eligible received ART
- 3,155 adults and 177 children newly initiated on life-saving ART during the reporting year
- 8,795 children under five received child welfare clinical services, including immunization and nutrition assessment
